Yep. Cat’s out of the bag.
When a Southerner says, “Bless your heart,” she most likely isn’t commiserating with you. Those innocent sounding words aren’t meant to convey kindness and empathy; she’s actually using a Special Southern Code for “Holy crap, you’re an idiot.”
She’s probably too polite to say it to your face.
God love ‘ya.
One of my bosses used to always say “bless your little cotton socks” l always thought she was a smart ass, l wonder if that was her equivalent to your “bless your heart”

I had a friend who always said, “Bless your little kitten ears!” Loved that!

Oh I like that one!! My nick name from back in the days when we run a Rock ‘n’ roll club was “Kimmy Kitten” because I was Secretary Treasurer and I was the youngest in the group, hence the kitten, now my Bloke just calls me Miz Kitten, so I like “Bless your Kitten ears” LOL

This is by far my favorite phrase that I have picked up since moving to the South some 25 years ago…especially once I found out what it actually meant! 🙂

Good to know the southern translations, I always thought it was an endearment

It can be, actually; but more of a “you are a little nut job, but I still love you, bless your heart.”

Ahahaha, it’s so true. We southerners can say the worst things in the sweetest way.

99 % of the time that is true. Once in a blue moon I mean it as commiseration. But it is spoken with a different tone and infection then.

It is a pale shadow of the continuing chronicles of Edward, but thank you! I just about peed myself laughing when I saw him at the Indian festival.
