F is for Frog’s Hair
/frɒɡz hɛ-əh/
If you realize that you’ve never noticed hair on a frog before, that’s because it’s so very fine it can’t be seen.
(ahem)
Down South, we use this as a common measure of an extreme level of “fineness.”
“How y’all?”
“Fine as Frog’s Hair!”
This can be further expounded (for things of an amazing and exemplary fineness):
“How y’all?”
“Fine as Frog’s Hair, split 3 ways!”
(Now that’s pretty fine.)
My daddy, a very positive and cheerful guy, takes it one step further.
“Hey Jim, how y’all been?”
“I been fine as Frog’s Hair, split 3 ways and sandpapered down the middle!”
“What do the old folks say,
She’s finer than frog hair split four ways” – Shooter Jennings, “The Deed and the Dollar.”
I’m one of those folks y’all refer to as a Yankee (I’m a fan of the New York Yankees) 😉 I’ve never heard this expression before – it’s fun!

It’s definitely an Alabama thing, maybe parts of Georgia and Mississippi. You should establish it, wherever you are! 🙂

Whenever I do posts like this, I always end up inspired – I’ve been saying “That dog won’t hunt,” all week after re-reading a post I did last year about Southern phrases. 🙂 Thank you for your kind words.

Never heard this saying, but I love it. I am going to adopt it I think 🙂

Please do use it! The older I get, the more I find myself “southerning out” my speech. Language is getting so sterile these days – it needs a little color and sass! Thanks for stopping by!

My Daddy says it all the time. Usually, as a response to “How are you?” But…you could say, “Wow – I reckon this day is just fine as a frog’s hair!” Or if someone proposes something awesome, “Well, that’d be fine as frog’s hair, if I do say so.”

It’s a great saying – I should have been born in the South!
