#Weekend Coffee Share: Survival is Sweet

~My theme for this month’s Nano Poblano challenge is Motion~

Hey!  So good to see you again!  Thank you for dropping by!

I made it through this week.  That is cause for celebration.

Let’s grab a cup and head out to the front porch – the weather is finally lovely and fall-like and it’s so nice sitting out their on the porch swing.

You are catching me on the end of a crazy busy seven-ish days. Yesterday, I helped out a friend of mine, who is a private chef, produce a rehearsal dinner for 50+ people.  Today, my husband and I hosted a book club meeting for my women’s organization.

Yes, we are a wine club who likes to read.

image

About 10  lovely ladies showed up for wine and snacks this afternoon to discuss our quarterly book selection, The Widow.  I thought the book was pretty good – the last few chapters were very suspenseful.  It’s not something I would have picked out on my own to read – most of our book group selections aren’t, so it’s nice to read a little out-0f-the-box every now and again.

image

Of course, Jeeves our alligator butler, met them at the door with a book and a drink.

Otherwise, my work week was insane.  I had two full complex buyouts with super-complicated logistics which meant my life hinged on the organizers’ daily whims.  I am so very grateful that they are over and done.

Done and successful.  ::whew::  Actually, I can pour you another cup of coffee or you can join me in a shot of tequila if you’re interested.  (Just kidding, but tempting after this week.)

So please tell me about your week…what did you do?  Did you accomplish a lot or just find time to relax and enjoy the change in Season?  Are you writing for NaBloPoMo, NaNoWriMo or Nano Poblano?  If so, how’s that going?

Do be sure to stop by next week for coffee again: big announcements are coming!

And thanks to Miss Emily’s Home for Full Grown Nerds for turning me on to Diane at Part-Time Monster’s #weekendcoffeeshare.  Please stop by her page to enjoy coffee and time with the rest of the crew!

Parading About

~My theme for this month’s Nano Poblano challenge is Motion~

Atlanta BeltLineLantern Parade September 12, 2015 photos by Christopher T Martin

Back in September, I participated in my second Beltline Lantern Parade, which just celebrated its seventh year in Atlanta. The Beltline Lantern Parade is part of the Art on the Beltline program and the brainchild Chantelle Rytter and the Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons, who host the cavalcade of lights, music and dance transiting the Eastside Trail the first Saturday after Labor Day each year.

Last year, my bestie and I concocted our own Krewe of paraders (based on the idea of a Mardi Gras Krewe) called the Krewe of the Sultry Sirens.

This year, we took it up a notch.

image

This year, we got a banner.

Unlike most of the other 60,000-odd revelers, content to simply flourish their home-made lantern creations, the “Sirens” add an “Under-the-Sea Theme” costume component, dressing up as “mermaids,” “fish” and a “crustacean,” and bearing jellyfish lanterns.

We also tossed beads and candy this year, very a la Mardi Gras, as we made our way down the trail.

That’s the back of our sign, btw.  It’s the actually the Krewe of the Sultry Sirens and One Cranky Crab

Because we are completely over the top (and quite happy to be so), next year, we’re setting up a Facebook page for the Krewe and taking pledges for the Surfrider Foundation, a group dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches.

That way at least our desperate need to attract attention to ourselves will contribute to a good cause.

Which is certainly worth parading about.

I keep these words taped to the mirror in my bathroom so I see them every morning when I wake up.

A Hellacious Belle’s Guide to the New South: Talkin’ the Talk

~My theme for this month’s Nano Poblano challenge is Motion~

-1

It’s the oddest thing.

For people who, as a rule, talk pretty slow and sometimes move even slower,  Southerners seem to pack a lot of action into their vernacular.

You see, I don’t just up and go to the store, I’m fixin’ to go to the store – by adding the helpful phrase “to fix,” I imply that I somehow prepare myself mentally, physically and spiritually to journey to Publix verses you Yanks just getting in your car and driving over.  Way more descriptive action = same result.

As Southerners, we may drawl our responses, but action bristles through our patois: dogs hunt, cousins kiss, possums are treed, biscuits are buttered. There are frequent calls to action: “Smile before your face freezes and you’re stuck like that forever,” “Do be a love and fetch my pocketbook,” “Eat that chicken! Folk are starvin’ clear around the world,” “Reach that there glass of wine and bring it to your momma.”

And then there are the idioms; truly enough literary motion to exhaust any listener:

“He’s so confused he don’t know whether to wind his butt or scratch his watch.”

“That room’s so small you couldn’t cuss a cat without getting hair in your teeth.”

“I’m feelin’ fine as frog’s hair, split three ways and sandpapered down the middle.”

“Run with the big dogs or stay on the porch.”

“Hon, you are barkin’ up the wrong tree.”

“He’s busier than a cat covering poop on a marble floor.”

“That skeeter’s so big he could stand flat-footed and screw a cow.”

A Southerner could be all relaxed and chillin’ on the porch swing, sipping some sweet tea or a coldbeer, but their conversation might as well be benchin’ a hundred in the gym.

“Afterwhile, we’ll mosey over.”

“Scamper off, littl’un.”

“Stop diddlepoopin’ around.”

“She is havin a hissy.”

“He was sweatin’ like a whore in church.”

While you surely  hear about all this activity, you actually very rarely see it.

Which is, I suppose, one of the things us folks down South do best, and that’s talkin’ the talk.

Just giving you some ponderin’ for your Monday.

I’m headin’ out now, seeing as I got more goin’ on than a one-eyed cat watchin’ two mouse holes, but you be sure and have yourself a nice day.

#Weekend Coffee Share: So happy to finally catch up!

~My theme for this month’s Nano Poblano challenge is Motion~

So please sit down and let me pour you a cup of something warm, since it’s a little chilly this morning.  We’ve got a great Sumatran dark roast, there’s green tea or chamomile and if you give me a sec, we can probably whip up some hot chocolate or spiced cider.

image
Ummm…spoke too soon.  Ix-nay on the spiced cider-ay,  and unfortunately, Pumpkin Lattes are a bit outside my skill set. There is some hot chocolate, though if you like.

I’m sorry it’s been so long since we’ve had coffee together.  I do think about you, every Sunday, and wish I had a moment to invite you over to catch up, but it’s been crazy nuts in my world for some time now.  I’m not complaining, mind you – it’s all good stuff.  All things to be grateful for!

I am particularly grateful for our recent trip to Florida.  OMG, I needed a break and beach time so much, as did my husband.
image
We spent eight amazing, relaxing days at Rosemary Beach, cooking, biking, sailing, soaking up sunrises and sunsets and just being happy.
image
I so did not want to go back to work on Tuesday!  Don’t you hate it when you come back from vacation and immediately need a vacation from the consequences of vacation!

I did get new glasses (and contacts) this week.  What do you think?
image
I am super thankful for good vision insurance, because the final bill came to more than I paid for my first car.   Grrrrr.  Well, at least I’ll be seeing clearly for a while.
Every little bit helps.

Would you like a little more coffee?  I know it’s my third cup, but I’m enjoying it being Sunday and not worrying about agendas or too much caffeine being bad for me.

We’re down in Augusta this weekend, visiting my Mother-in-Law, Linda.  We needed to get her pool covered for the winter and David had some work he wanted to do in the yard.
We had time to take the canoe out on the lake yesterday for a while after we finished with the yard.
image
Such a gorgeous day.  And a pretty lake, although it’s a little snakey around the edges.

Today, we’re headed back to Atlanta.  ::sigh::I’ve got a full plate for next week with two giant events at work – the kind I will have to come in early and stay very late for, the monthly luncheon for my professional women’s organization is on Wednesday; plus I’ve to take my car in for a diagnostic check (damn engine light keeps coming on!) and next weekend I’m hosting our quarterly book club meeting at the house. Our book is The Widow, which I haven’t read yet, but plan to on our drive back home this afternoon.  Oh, and I need to figure out a menu for that and do some paperwork for my Scottish heritage group and laundry and shopping…it never stops, does it?

So what have you been up to?  Are you taking part in NaBloPoMo or Nano Poblano?  I’m doing both, even though I’m sure I’ll be taking liberties with photo posts and quick check ins…I mostly love Nano Poblano so much for the community here and I always roll out of a November of daily posting with the honorable intentions of posting more and reading more and commenting more because I love that feeling of connectivity and family…and then life jumps in and scatters me every which way and I fade away until April, when I try A-to-Z (and typically stumble and fall out half way…)

Maybe this year.  One of the changes I’m hoping for is to have a little more control of my day and my schedule.

Aw, anyhow I hate that you have to go – I know I chattered your ears off.  And that’s what coffee does to me.
Let me grab your sweater for you and let’s promise to catch up again next Sunday, okay?
I hope you have an amazing week!

The Drifters

~My theme for this month’s Nano Poblano challenge is Motion~

I work on the next-to-the-top floor of a high rise smack dab in the middle of the city.  I see weather from a bird’s eye view, which is pretty amazing. Skies of dazzling deepest blue to impermeable banks of fog to electrical storms that dissect the sky with streaks of lightning.
My absolute favorite weather to watch?  Drifting clouds.

Nanopoblano 2016: Day 1

November 1st.  It’s the first day of National Blog Posting Month.

It’s also the first day of Nano Poblano: a month-long, daily word lagniappe – a blog-i-licious goody bag of stories, poetry, photos and posts from the Cheer Peppers, led by the lovely Ra and her constellation of glowing, twinkly blokin.

I’m so excited to be a part of Nano Poblano – it thrills me each year to be included with these kind, supportive, talented Peppers.  I’m excited to write, but (totally typical) I’m having a crazy-hard time writing.

It’s been a year of changes for me – and not just actual change, a lot of that is still coming, but planning for change t00 and that’s pretty huge stuff ’cause you want to get it right.

I’ve had to find the right space for this garden of what-i-want-to-be where I can grow and become, clearing out the underbrush so the sunlight and starlight can flood in, studying and planning and sorting the things to plant that I want to bloom into reality.  Prepping and weeding and watering and breathing and believing and watching as the tiny sprout-lets push towards the surface.

I decided it might help to have a theme for my contributions to Nano Poblano this year.  There’s so many thoughts swirling and twirling about my wee kitten head that maybe a label could also be a focus, an anchor, a corral, a guide.

My choice is motion.

Sailing on Saturday with my husband, I saw these amazing beings dancing through the water with such grace and joy and ease that I hope with all my heart I can bring some of their magic into my movement forward.

A Hellacious Belle’s Pictorial Guide to the New South: F is for Frog’s Hair #AtoZChallenge

F

F is for Frog’s Hair

/frɒɡz hɛ-əh/

If you realize that you’ve never noticed hair on a frog before, that’s because it’s so very fine it can’t be seen.

 (ahem)

Down South, we use this as a common measure of an extreme level of “fineness.”

“How y’all?”

“Fine as Frog’s Hair!”

This can be further expounded (for things of an amazing and exemplary fineness):

“How y’all?”

“Fine as Frog’s Hair, split 3 ways!

(Now that’s pretty fine.)

My daddy, a very positive and cheerful guy, takes it one step further.

“Hey Jim, how y’all been?”

“I been fine as Frog’s Hair, split 3 ways and sandpapered down the middle!

“What do the old folks say,
She’s finer than frog hair split four ways” – Shooter Jennings, “The Deed and the Dollar.”

A Hellacious Belle’s Guide to the New South: E is for Egg Salad Sandwich #AtoZChallenge

E

E IS FOR EGG SALAD SANDWICH

/ĕg săl′əd samĭch/

An icon of Southern porch and picnic cuisine, the humble Egg Salad Sandwich gets a ton of press this time each year in its role as a snack stand staple of the Master’s Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

Along with its buddies, the Pimento Cheese Sandwich, the Master’s Club Sandwich and the Master’s Bar-B-Que, this (surprisingly) reasonably priced sammy has become a cult favorite with the golfing crowd and a legend of the Augusta culinary scene.

Since the Augusta National Golf Course refuses to release the exact recipe of the eggy tastiness lurking between two pieces of white bread and tidily wrapped in green cellophane, a slew of copy-cats have emerged; each claiming the key to making the perfect Egg Salad.

So if you’re bored, actually into golf or just want to see a really pretty golf course, put the Master’s on your watch list this weekend, pop into the kitchen and whip up some of these practically authentic treats (sand traps are optional.)

Oh, and brew up a jug of sweet tea.  Nothing washes down an egg salad sammich better.

Unless, of course, it’s a cold beer (/kōld’bir/  – said as one word, accent on the first syllable).  That works, even gooder n’ better.

KISSIN’ COUSIN TO THE MASTERS EGG SALAD SANDWICH

6 hard-boiled eggs, shells removed

1⁄3 cup or slightly more, to taste, of Duke’s Mayonnaise

3⁄4 teaspoon yellow mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

Chop the eggs in a large bowl until just slightly chunky. Add remaining ingredients and stir well. Serve on white bread.

“Oh man, Friday, I really wanted an egg salad sandwich and I was just obsessing about it and I was like, ‘Man, I’m gonna make one of those.”Andy Stitzer, “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.”

A Hellacious Belle’s Pictorial Guide to the New South: D is for Drawers #AtoZChallenge

D

D is for Drawers

/drôrz/ or /drôr-ahz/

Drawers may be where you store your unmentionables, but in the South, it’s the unmentionables themselves.

The use of the term “drawers” instead of “underwear” most likely originated in 16th century Europe, but eventually packed up its own drawers and journeyed to the Southern U.S. to settle comfortably into our everyday speech. It is said to derive from the act of putting on your underpants – you “draw” them up your body.

Sure, people in the South use the words “boxers,” “panties,” and “tighty whities,” but saying “drawers” is a lot more fun.

“Well, calm down and keep your drawers on.”

“Did you bring you a set of clean drawers?”

“I swear, she’s not got a lick o’ decency.  She’s got no drawers on a’tall under that dress.”

“Put your drawers on, and take your gun off.”– Blondie, “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.”
