At six, I stood
by the big American flag
and pledged allegiance,
empty words of a child.
Friday night, I stood
by the blaring TV
and pledged again,
weighted words of an adult,
to honor my country and those who protect her.
I like how you established the chasm between reciting words as a child and reciting them when you know what they mean. I’m wondering: did the bombings in France make you change your ideas about the US or did they remind and reaffirm things for you?
It was a reminder, more than anything. I’ve always been a huge supporter of our military, but it brought it into sharp perspective how they stand between terrorism and our safety and freedom.
Wow. Your words have a lot of weight. Well done!
